DOPE LEMON Returns with New EP ‘Hounds Tooth’
DOPE LEMON, the side project of Angus Stone, one part of Angus & Julia Stone, has released new EP, Hounds Tooth.
After the release of Honey Bones just last year, Uptown Folks being on repeat for the better part of the year, Dope Lemon calling from down under is back with a five song new EP, Hounds Tooth.
Kicking it off with the first single, Home Soon. Some serious guitar on this one and the flute is a magical touch as it dances through the song. It’s filled with some big brass moments and sections of funk which carry it together. A departure from Stone’s previous work, but still shows his personality thoroughly.
Next song on there is Neon Lights, that sounds distinctively Dope Lemon. Laid back and effortlessly put together, the vocal layers imbedded in his aesthetic and in this song. Its delicate guitars flicker and fly around as it captures the lyrics and its relaxed nature. “We could go forget who we are, let’s go.” Alright, alright, I’m coming.
The title track Hounds Tooth, broody guitars with echoing vocals create a great opening silhouette at the beginning of the track and they continue to grow to the end. You can hear this short time away has Stone experimenting with vocal arrangements more creatively and pushing his voice further. The drawling like and choir like backing vocals paired with organ like keys shows him stepping out into different territory. And it works.
He follows that up with, Lovers Left To Die. Warning, this one is going to make you sway and make you move. This song is perfectly mastered with restraint and again reflects a range of genres and influences that fuse together perfectly.
Where Do You Go, hits us next, the last track on the EP. The repeating vocals carry us through the first part of the song and then it opens up. A variety of arrangements throughout this 6.48 minute tune, it has several distinctive moments within. With some psychedelic treated vocals in the middle and the gorgeous piano to carry track out slowly.
Overall, Hounds Tooth shows some true artistic showmanship. Each track captures, an experimenting element with sound and creating a strong visual reaction. It’s bold in subdued way which is what he does so well.
