DAN CROLL’s Never Been to ‘Tokyo’ in His Latest Animated Video
Following the release of his Tokyo EP, Dan Croll has unveiled new animated video for the tune Tokyo.
For an artist who’s only just venturing into his sophomore album, Dan Croll has nailed the Jack Antonoff style geek chic aesthetic and sound. Dreamy vocals and silky smooth synths? Check. Thick rimmed glasses and a jawline that could cut glass? Check.
His latest release Tokyo is a sugary indie pop track, with an infectious hook that will stay in your head for days accompanied by a visually striking animation by Simon Landrein, who has previously worked with Rick & Morty and Cartoon Network.
The video, comprised of moving line drawings representing Dan exploring a fantasised Tokyo, pushes the boundaries of reality with bizarre characters such as a giant walking head, a flying car and legs with eyes. Watching it start to finish is like having the most wholesome LSD trip you’ll ever experience.
Speaking of the collaboration, Dan Croll said:
I’ve always wanted to do an animated video and I’m so glad to not only get to finally do it but also to work with the amazing Simon Landrein. I’ve admired his work for a long time now, he’s someone who has mastered the simplicity and humour of animation so well and I’m so happy with the Tokyo results!
Landrien was similarly pleased with the results, saying:
It was really great to work on this project as I was excited to explore the visual aspect of jealousy set in a fantasized vision of Tokyo. It was fun to translate the imagination and dreams we can have around the imagery that this city can create in our mind.
Tokyo is the closing track from Croll’s striking second album Emerging Adulthood, released in July this year.
