LEWIS CAPALDI Unveils Video for New Single ‘Grace’
Lewis Capaldi’s voice is haunting. So is everything else about his newest single Grace and the accompanying music video.
We meet Lewis as his visibly hangover female friend asks him to cover her shift that evening. He agrees and even before the song begins, we see him walk into a bar, assuming that he’s going to be waiting tables. Surprise, surprise! As Lewis’ electrifying voice, laced with pain and longing, hits the notes, we discover a half-empty gentlemen’s club and see Lewis prepping for a show. Led by piano, with some soft bass and drums, the song makes us wonder. Backstage, with his guitar, we assume that Lewis is going to be performing… and we are wrong yet again.
Lewis becomes a pole-dancer, to the awe and initial disgust of the attendees. The clash between the deeply emotional, meaning-heavy song and the somewhat comical, somewhat sad accompanying visuals creates feelings of wonder, amusement and awe. Indeed, as time passes Lewis is joined by four male strippers and the audience goes from hostile at best to absolutely ecstatic, cheering and throwing bills as Lewis swings from the pole and does a choreographed dance number.
Whether putting a visibly overweight musician in a traditionally over sexualised, feminine position is a feminist stance and a shout out to body positivity is up for discussion. What’s certain, however, is that the backflips that Lewis performs as the bridge graces us (pun intended) with only his voice and a few light piano chords are what we live and breathe for.
Lewis says about the project:
‘Grace’ is a song about being with someone who makes any negative shit going on in your life feel irrelevant. There’s something class about finding someone who can do that – you don’t know what you were doing or how you felt before. That’s where the line about finding salvation in the form of your grace comes from.
For the video I wanted to do something different to what I’d usually do or what I’ve seen from other artists who are doing songs that have a similar subject matter. There are some people who are really good at doing sincere videos, and that’s cool, but it’s just not me. Despite my songs being emotional, I’m not really the serious type, so I thought it would be funny to do the most ridiculous idea imaginable!
Lewis, mate, in your own words – YOU SMASHED IT!
The single comes just before Capaldi starts off his UK & EU headline tour which will see him play fourteen dates around the country, including two nights at the 2,200 capacity Glasgow Barrowlands that both sold out in less than an hour, and a venue he watched many of his favourite artists play as a kid growing-up. In London, Lewis will return to play a sold out O2 Shepherds Bush Empire on November 13th.
