Live: BOY & BEAR // O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London
Boy & Bear make their triumphant return to Europe in a harmonious night in London.
As Sydney locals, Boy & Bear don’t make too many trips across to Europe to showcase their rich indie-rock folk sound. Especially in light of lead singer Dave Hosking’s recently documented battles with his own deteriorating health.
Following the release of their 2015 album Limit Of Love and subsequent tour, Boy & Bear were flung into doubt as to the future of their music and the very band itself. Hosking elected to take a break from the band to focus on his health concerns. Fortunately, he recovered and the band went on to produce their latest work, Suck On Light late last year.
Despite a four-year tour hiatus, Boy & Bear made sure you felt all the feels.
Old Town Blues opened what was to be an impassioned and celebratory set before moving along to Milk And Sticks from their 2011 debut album Moonfire. With such a large gap between albums, the set had an intrinsic nostalgic feel. Despite being in London to tour their latest piece of musical work, Boy & Bear went out of their way to ensure you remembered what life was like almost a decade ago.
The walk down memory lane was filled with their biggest tracks from their discography, while maintaining a blend of their more modern works to keep you guessing what came next.
The culmination of the night was the encore of their three biggest tracks, Limit Of Love, their cover of Crowded House’s Fall At Your Feet, and clear fan favourite Southern Sun. The encore had the feeling of revel and was played by a band who was clearly just happy to be up there and doing what they love.
Boy & Bear demonstrated to their fans new and old that they still have it, and here is hoping they are able to make their way back over again soon.
