Artist Of The Week // MEIA

The catchy new single from Meia is sure to be an anthem for introverts everywhere.

MEIA Antisocial 2020You know that feeling when you’re at a social event, and you would rather be anywhere else than there? Well, know that you are not alone in having those thoughts as Meia shares similar sentiments in her new single Antisocial. Combining sarcastically honest lyrics like “Can’t pretend I want to know what’s on your mind” with a transparent performance, there’s a raw charisma to Meia that you can’t help but fall in love with. Taking the genre of pop and wielding it into her personal vehicle for venting her frustrations, Antisocial delivers all of the catchiness of pop tracks without the artificial optimism and bubbly-ness that it is frequently paired with.

Explaining more of the meaning behind the track, Meia shares:

‘Antisocial’ is for those who would rather order pizza and binge Netflix than go out on the town to party – those silently enjoying quarantine. It’s a simple “no thank you, I’d rather be home.” The dark pop track with an alt-rock influence shines a light on my frustrations with the world today by sharing my overrated experience of going out and having “wasted, empty conversations.” I hope to inspire young souls to be genuine and worry less about impressing others.

Feeling inspired by her willingness to be open about her true emotions and thoughts, we chatted with Meia more about the social pressures that inspired Antisocial and her thoughts on it.

What’s a motto you live by and why?

If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say it at all! The best thing you can be in this world is kind. You never know what someone is going through. This motto resonates with me because I definitely experienced some bullying growing up. It’s simply not cool to be mean! It’s cool to be kind 🙂

If your sound had a colour, what colour would it be and why?

ALL THE COLORS! I often incorporate a color theme with each song because each song I write has a different feel to me. My last EP boys don’t want a sad girl was a pretty pink and my new single Antisocial is blue.

Do you think social media helps or hinders the ‘wasted, empty conversations’ that you sing about?

Definitely hinders. I want to have conversations with meaning, where you look into someone’s eyes and they look back, truly listening to you. This lyric is about the famous “how are you” question people say in passing, careless of the actual response. What’s the point?

Why do you feel like there’s such a pressure nowadays to be out all the time?

I think peer pressure is a real thing. As a little girl, I didn’t understand it but then I grew up. Also, social media. It seems like people feel the need to be “seen” out, rather than just be out. One lyric I wrote in Antisocial says, “Everybody’s getting dressed up to put on a show, I don’t want to go.” I’m referring to Instagram. The world’s intentions are all over the place, truly.

Would you class yourself as one of the people secretly enjoying quarantine?

I’ve definitely had my challenges with quarantine but I have been secretly enjoying it. How many times do we get to hit the pause button in life and relax? I will not be the one to take that opportunity for granted 😉

If you could set Antisocial to a Netflix series or movie, which one would it be the soundtrack for and why?

I would say Riverdale. I feel like Jughead’s grungy character fits the vibe of this song perfectly. I also love that it is based on the Archie comics. SO MUCH ART.

What would be your ideal, antisocial night in?

Rainy weather, take out, sweatpants, no makeup, candles, cuddles + movies.

What advice would you give to someone trying to be genuine and not give in to societal pressures of going out?

My advice is to simply be firm in who you are and stop caring about what everybody else thinks! You have two options when you enter a room. You can adapt to the energy or influence the energy. For example, if you don’t want to drink and you’re the only one without a drink, that’s okay.

You mentioned that Antisocial is for everyone who would rather binge Netflix and eat pizza; on that note, do you think pineapple belongs on pizza?

I can appreciate a pizza with chicken, pineapple and barbecue sauce – but it’s been a while. I’m a plain pie girl. Shoutout to Krispy pizza in Old Bridge, NJ.

And finally, what does music mean to you?

Music is therapy. It’s actually the reason I am sane. It is the bridge between everyone and everything in the world. It’s something people can feel, dance to and associate with memories. I don’t want to live in a world without music.
