BABY QUEEN Releases Debut Single ‘Internet Religion’
Internet Religion takes a critical view of current Gen Z attitudes towards the online personas we all seem to create in a playful and energetic pop song.
There’s a new popstar in town about to take over the radio with her subtly scathing lyricism and charming alt-pop; her name is Baby Queen. Her debut single Internet Religion features striking, satirical lyrics overtop of bright, fast pop full of muted guitar, electric synths, and snappy, rapid percussion. It is a self-deprecating, darkly honest look at what ‘internet kids’ do online. Baby Queen’s vocals stand out for the sass and sweet cadence of her voice. The candid spirit of Internet Religion comes across in sarcastic lyrics like “I’m done saving the world so take a look at these / Cool shoes, take a look at me, me, me!” and “Yeah! That’s fucking cool and it’s a pity / We can’t Facetune personality”. But, despite these messages and critiques, you forget you’re listening to a takedown of the internet because of its peppy, upbeat instrumentation.
The accompanying music video perfectly captures the spirit of Baby Queen’s words. The on-trend use of word-art, outrageous early 2000s gifs, and other nostalgic elements combined with modern-day memes, software, and aesthetics blend to create something that is both antiquated and cool. It is the perfect level of quirky needed to visually convey the message within Internet Religion.
Discussing the track and inspiration for it, Baby Queen explained:
I hate the way that is so easy to control your identity online and you become so obsessed with who you are online and how many people are liking your pictures.
I started to write bitterly about the world that I had perceived whilst being here in London, and the way that it had changed me, and the narcissist I had become. I got obsessed with these identities that we cultivate online; the front stage self and the backstage self, who you actually are and who you pretend to be.
