Emerging from the vibrant Bristol music scene, Cousin Kula are a psychedelic-pop band who live and record together in the sunny outskirts of their southwest city. Described as ‘dreamy and leftfield’ by NME, Cousin Kula naturally catch the attention of renowned critics, and even turned the head of notable tastemaker Bradley Zero with the release of their Casa Kula Cassette EP. Due to them appearing in various bands since they were teenagers, the lack of performing opportunities during lockdown was extremely disappointing for the five-piece. This didn’t stop them, however, since they began creating, recording and posting online a series of homemade live sessions, which consequently influenced them to record a live adaptation of their latest single.

Jazz-infused and dominated by glorious synths, Now That You’re Gone reflects on the slower pace which life in isolation influenced us to have. Providing a satisfying taste of what their debut album will abundantly offer, this track encompasses distinctly unique vocals, stunning harmonies and glittering guitars. Keys player Will Wells speaks on the single:

This one started life deep into lockdown. I would set keyboards up outside Elliot’s bedroom window so we could still play together without me coming in the house. I guess the tune’s simplicity is, in some way, a reflection of the slower pace of life we’d gotten used to.

As well as being the lead single from their upcoming album, the track arrives with vivid performance visuals. Soaked in a splendidly rich turmeric hue, the music video features the yellow-adorned band grooving along to their warm new single. Frontman Elliot comments on the music video:

We wanted to make a video that is basically the album’s cover image as a music video. The concept was for everything to be completely turmeric all hand dyed by my good self. We used 10kg of turmeric and dyed 24 metres of fabric as well as all of our outfits, it took days and the whole house stank of turmeric! Plus my hands were orange for weeks. We wanted to embrace the fact we would be miming, do it a bit top of the pops with instruments obviously not plugged in, not taking it too seriously. We essentially just goofed around in a huge warehouse for a day in yellow outfits.

Cousin Kula are renowned for their sublime live performances and excitingly, they are scheduled to play some exclusive headline shows in December.
