BLAENAVON Release Video for ‘Lonely Side’

Following up their critically acclaimed debut, That’s Your Lot, Blaenavon unveil brand new video for their luminous single, Lonely Side

The Hampshire trio has finally broken out of their shell and released their immensely detailed and marvellously twisted debut. Following up a whirlwind of touring, Blaenavon add some visuals to Lonely Side.

The fluid tune evokes a sense of submerged heartache and still, the melodic landscape extracts from a larger emotive spectre. It is definitely one of Blaenavon’s more subtle compositions, yet it shines in all its graciousness. The eye for details has a profound impact on the soundscape, and the elegantly layered percussion flourish in all its submissiveness. The lighter hooks contrasted to the deeper notes of Ben Gregory’s vocals also create a savoury balance, opening a gate to the delicate lyricism.

The video accompanying the track leaves enough room for the tune to shine on its own, yet adds a playful backdrop of beautiful composition and cinematic plays. Filmed whilst the band were in Texas for SXSW the visuals mainly swirl around playing out the tune, or simply just playing, in a dim lit backyard. The absolute best, and most aesthetically pleasing, moment is Ben’s stoic fall into a pool played in reversed slow-motion. Though the video doesn’t portray a sense of narrative, it still brings forth the ‘lonely side’ through a series of single-person portrait clips.

Discussing the song, singer/guitarist Ben Gregory stated:

It’s probably about time that I admitted I am a young, ridiculous, romantic buffoon.

I am in love with everyone at the same time: but in and out of love constantly – disillusioned like a juvenile James Dean. This is incredibly unhealthy, but also very fucking funny. I will continue to get absolutely everything wrong until I grow old, settle down and die.

Until then, I walk the Lonely Side.

Though luckily caught up in the marvellous clusterfuck that is Blaenavon.

The trio is also set to return to their imaginary roots, playing a one-off headline show in the one and only Blaenavon, the Welsh town, the 10th of May, with the following statement:

We owe a lot to the people of Blaenavon. We’ve blatantly ripped them off but they’ve still always supported us. We’ve been talking about a show there for years and now seems like the perfect time. Pretty bonkers that the Male Voice Choir are up for it, too. It’s going to be the perfect ridiculous celebration of everyone’s hard work over the last 5 years. A battle to the death. Blaenavon vs Blaenavon.
