SLØTFACE New Song Review // “Take Me Dancing”
Norwegian punkers SLØTFACE release new single Take Me Dancing.
If you haven’t heard of Sløtface aka Slutface yet, you’re in for a treat. With a riot-grrl nostalgia and a badass female character, that would make even Pitchfork’s Jessica Hopper proud, Sløtface bring something exciting and energetic to the indie scene. Their pop-punk is so honest and youthful that it can’t help but grab the listener’s attention. Lyrically they expose every side of the dazed and confused teenage life, featuring bad parties, impossible standards and ‘skinny white bitches’.
Even with a name of the band such as ‘Sløtface’ (Slutface) being a statement that “women should be seen as more than objects”, it is pretty obvious these are opinionated individuals.
Haley‘s lyrics made the feminist cause a collective cause for us as a band, but we all support the message individually as well – says Halvard, the drummer.
Following the release of their kick-ass Sponge State EP, their newest single is a flipping good tune. Upbeat and full of joy, Take Me Dancing, is all you need for a good time whilst still taking a social conscious side-glance at the youth culture.
A demo version has previously been available for the Norwegian crowd but the newest one has a much tighter production than much of the band’s earlier work, yet still it has kept their core spark and a DIY feel. A catchy hook, an impressive drum-work and Haley Shea’s cool-cat vocals all stand strong in this tune that ultimately will make you feel positive about the future of the guitar music again.
However, some are sceptical when self-confessed feminist badass Sløtface release a ‘not politically themed tune’.
Some people were sceptical of us releasing a song about dancing and getting drunk because they felt like it made us ‘less believable feminists’, but that is kind of the whole point of this song – explains the vocalist Haley Shea. The feminism we have faith in is all about individualism and being free to be yourself regardless of gender. Yes, we believe in equal rights for all genders, but we also like partying and drinking and sometimes we make mistakes, and that’s OK.
I still think the lyrics of the tune are brilliant and surely any young person can relate, so let’s stop with the fuss.
All we are trying to say is that it’s OK to let loose and have fun from time to time.
This is a band with a message and they demand to be heard. With these promising words, I will say that you definitely will hear more of Sløtface in the future.
