Previously a cinematographer, who has created wonderful visuals for renowned stars such as Post Malone and The XX, Lewis Knaggs is no stranger to the camera and understands the art of a good music video. Therefore, it is no surprise that the music video for his single Shoulder To Shoulder outstandingly captures the complex emotions which are evoked in the song.

Throughout the music video, we see a female protagonist, who could be portraying the muse of the song. Either moving forward or remaining stationary, she consistently appears thoughtful or joyful during both her stillness and her movement. A monochromatic lens captures every moment, as the cinematic video shifts between visuals of the pensive woman and visuals of Lewis’ performance. However, as if to reveal more to us viewers, just over halfway through the music video, the colour of the moving images shifts from black and white to soft colour. Shots of Lewis reveal him to be performing Shoulder To Shoulder passionately at a mic stand, whilst also playing guitar, against a backdrop of streetlights. This atmospheric and hazy mood lighting, provided by the streetlamps, subtly contrasts with the beautiful sunlight which is captured in the shots of the woman.

The sky serves an importance purpose in this stunning music video, as there is a clear difference in timescale between the visuals of the woman and the visuals of Lewis; whilst the woman is predominantly captured in a daytime setting, with the sun shining brightly, Lewis performs against a twilight backdrop. The contrasting visuals of daylight and night-time could be symbolic of Lewis’ lyrics in the chorus, “we’ll stand shoulder to shoulder but miles away”, as the daytime sun and the twilight moon are physically close to each other in the sky but always miss one another due to their differing times and purposes. This music video, with its distinct visuals of day and night, is cleverly reflective of the meaning behind Shoulder To Shoulder, which is that you can be intensely close to someone you love but simultaneously very distant.

Speaking on the single, Lewis states:

This song is about finding yourself again after the end of a relationship. Romantic or otherwise. It’s about wishing the best for that other person almost more than yourself. Any relationship you dive into shapes who you are. It’s a song about respecting that and sending love to the other person, even though they may be thousands of miles away physically.
