Artist Of The Week // TIM SCHOU

Emerging pop musician Tim Schou shares the video for HERO/LOSER, the focus track from his debut album.

TIM SCHOU

Scandinavian pop artist Tim Schou is establishing himself as an exciting, emerging name on the pop scene as he captivates our hearts with an irresistibly fun and bouncy sound. Having released his debut album earlier this year, he continues to expand his creative empire beyond the sonic realm by sharing the entertaining new video for HERO/LOSER.

The kick-ass soundtrack receives an equally enthralling visual makeover as Tim plays a myriad of eccentric characters from a bandana-donning breakdancer, to a balloon-gunning clown, all who await judgment about whether they are a ‘hero’ or a ‘loser’. The different personalities reflect extreme parodies of Tim’s own traits and the roles he has played in the music and throughout his life, until he found the truth and confidence to just be his underlying, authentic self. Despite the lighthearted exterior, the video and song delves deeper into the sentiments of how we judge ourselves and others.

Speaking about his intentions with the video, Tim shares:

By focusing on the way we tried out different characters throughout the video, we discovered all the human aspects in the story and tried to highlight them.

Feeling exhilarated by the entertaining video and track, while touched by the insight offered by Tim, we spoke to him further about how he managed to come to grips with his own identity.

What’s a motto you live by?

What’s the point of having a plan B when it only distracts from plan A?

I think I was 17 when I first saw this quote. I picked it up from Will Smith, I believe. The timing was kinda perfect for me, as it was right when I had made up my mind about quitting school to become a rockstar. I think it just manifested itself in me and really made sense to me, that to obtain one’s goals you shouldn’t worry too much on having a backup plan. That’s also why 10 years later, at age 27, I sold my apartment and lived as a couch surfer for the next 7 years. I needed that all or nothing, to obtain my goals. So thank you Will. lol.

If your sound had a colour, what colour would it be?

Oh man. Tough one. Hmmm. I guess white is more like a shade than a color but I choose white, the color of transparency. I think that’s what my songs are. Transparent, as all of them are autobiographical.

If you could set HERO/LOSER to a TV show or movie, what would it be the soundtrack for?

Fun fact. The song is already sorta being used as the soundtrack for a TV show…. my own. lol. The music video for HERO/LOSER is a play on a TV show called ‘HERO/LOSER’ so there ya have it. Was that too easy? – I would have loved to hear it as soundtrack to some teenage movie like ‘Scary Movie’ or something. Haha. That was very random. Wow.

Why do you think it’s so easy for us to judge ourselves and each other?

Hmm. I think often we judge other people, because their choices or ways of living life, make us feel scared or jealous of the lifestyle or decisions we wish we had the guts to carry out ourselves.

What are some things that have helped you to become less judgmental?

Definitely travelling and meeting as many different humans as possible. Not judging is probably the best thing we can do for ourselves and each other. That’s freedom for you and freedom for your fellow human. You never know what that person has gone through to get to where he/she is or what lies behind their decisions to live life the way they do. I went to a school when I was 16 years old. An art school where we lived together with 100 other students. That was my first experience of cohabitating with different kinds of people, from all over the place. I came from a small little village in the countryside, and I think without this school experience, I wouldn’t have learned the importance of embracing our differences at such an early age.

What has been your fondest memories and moments so far since releasing your debut album?

Uhh, THE REVIEWS! haha. Not so much the fact that it’s been good reviews, more so, that I even got any. lol. I had this fear that my debut album would be like farting. Feels good for a second and maybe a few people in the room would be like “Woaaah dude” – and then it would be over. But this feels like more than an average fart and I’m beyond grateful. Sorry for the stinky analogy.

What inspires you the most in your music-writing?

The people around me. Oh and death. Serious though.

And finally, slightly cliché but what does music mean to you?

Waking up in the morning. <3
