PENNY Releases Expressive Single ‘Outside’
On a bed of thumping bass, PENNY’s heavenly vocals profess her entanglement with jealousy, and how this strong emotion can be misinterpreted for lust.

Hailing from Huddersfield, England, PENNY is a 23-year-old, critically-acclaimed singer-songwriter who launched her career with her debut single Sad Puppy in the summer of 2021. Dreamily combining her West Yorkshire charisma with her stunning vocals, PENNY is the embodiment of tranquility – a rare quality which is highly sought after for a soothing listening experience.
Produced by Will Serfass, who also goes by WASSAILER, PENNY’s latest single Outside is an indie-electronica track which introspectively delves into the artist’s envy and mental health. As if to accentuate the shifting mood depicted in the lyrics, this song is constructed with arpeggiated melodies and layers of varied sonics.
PENNY shares:
It feels like so long ago since I wrote ‘Outside’, but usually, when I write something, it’s because I need to find a way to process my emotions – it’s kind of like therapy to me. The song is all about jealousy, and how I became borderline obsessed with my ex’s ex. I found myself wondering whether my jealousy towards her was actually lust – the whole “do I want to be you, or be with you?” thing. However, in writing the song and looking at the situation through an ‘outside’ perspective, I came to realise how ridiculous this was, and that I am really quite perfect just the way I am.
Created by PENNY’s best friend Eloise Shaw, an artist who dabbles in experimental visuals, the luminous music video for Outside is an enthralling journey of shifting surrealism. About the visuals, Eloise shares:
Feeling like you’re always on the outside can leave you feeling deflated and unworthy but hopefully, this video shows that there can be beauty in the moments of solace and quiet.
With stellar production from her sole collaborator WASSAILER, PENNY’s debut six-track EP My Secret Powers is available to buy and stream now. Incorporating themes of mental health, queerness, identity and dreams, PENNY’s poignant lyricism throughout the EP is presented in an uplifting, dream-pop package of angelic vocals and textural sonics.
