SWIM DEEP Gig Review // the band play at Roundhouse in London

Swim Deep go big at the Roundhouse in London.

How deep can you swim? How deep are you ready to swim? I feel like I might be drowning. But in a good way.

Drowning in the sound of a band who have done a lot of mess and noise in my recent music world. I’ve been thinking, you know…and I realised that every now and then a band comes along who changes much more than just the weather. They might be that one for me. See what I did there? Clever!

Swim Deep played the Roundhouse in London last week which was a delightful ending to their UK tour. Supported by two amazing bands The Magic Gang and Catholic Action, this B-Town five-piece gathered rather big but diverse fan base. Despite not really sold out venue the anticipation was excruciating, in lack of a better word. The crowd was going mad (alright I was going mad), I even saw dressed up kids carrying some swimwear gear. Well, that’s very interesting. What have I missed?

You know what’s even more interesting? The fact that when I was catching up with Catholic Action before their show, Swim Deep were playing football backstage. But I was able to send them only a smile. Awesome! Nice move.

The group kicked off with the track Namaste taken from the recently released sophomore album Mothers and interlaced it with some good oldie Francisco. Glorious start of the set! I must say the entire arrangement was beautiful. The lighting, the trumpet guy joining on One Great Song and I Could Change The World, the female dancer pirouetting to the mighty eight-and-a-half minute banger Fueiho Boogie. Besides alien Forever Spacemen and melodic Imagination, the crowd went off with Honey and King City. Of course, it did. Oh have I mentioned they appeared onstage while Jurassic Park theme was playing?

Anything you can imagine is real and you probably find it in this band.

The encore started with one of my favourites from the new album Laniakea, followed by the absolute beauty – the song that probably changed it all in my case – She Changes the Weather, finished with To My Brother to which all the supporting bands joined Swim Deep on stage. Big happy family. Aren’t we all?

Let me tell you something more – you just have to see Swim Deep performing live, at least once in your life, even if it’s only to watch James Balmont’s dancing moves. You’ll believe me when you see it.
