DAN CROLL plays the intimate show for Deezer Live

Deezer Live are a monthly series of live performances putting on in the partnership with The Hospital Club in London. And they’re pretty cool.

Not long since his critically acclaimed 2014 debut album Sweet Disarray. Although it feels like he was hiding or something. In Atlanta, GA to be precise. After spending the summer overseas working on his second record Dan Croll is ready to show us some of his magic again.

The English singer-songwriter played a small gig at The Hospital Club courtesy of Deezer Live last month. Really, really small room which only made the entire experience more beautiful and memorable.

Opening with the strong track called Eminem followed by the gentle swaying of Can You Hear Me the band intends to interlace dreamy melodies of the Sweet Disarray with some of the new material. In that blend you easily recognize the genius of the multi instrumental skills and the tenderness of backing vocals.

Between the verses I keep thinkin’ ’bout the right track, Thinkin’ aboutchu and Maybe I should ring, maybe I should call you my girl the singer claims there might be a recording going on in progress. For the future purposes of course. Apparently, the band makes a few mistakes so he’s not sure if anything can make the cut. Oh dear, no one noticed. All is perfect.

As if they needed more compliments we hear the nostalgic guitars and longing vocals of Compliment Your Soul. Subtle and catchy rhythms at its best!

The song that definitely draws my attention with the high possibility of becoming my favourite is Swim. Listening to the soothing and delicate harmonies makes you want to follow the singer’s voice wherever it takes you. I guess this is why I fell for Dan Croll’s music in the first place. It just sounds so honest and pure and that makes it enough. At that particular moment in time and space it is enough.

But let’s add some uptempo beats and move on to the next song One Of Us which is the first single taken from the upcoming and untitled sophomore album. Watch the brilliant music video for it below. Talking to the press Dan Croll made a few comments about the track:

“One of Us” is about peer-pressure and not wanting to give in, and, like my first album, this one will jump from genre to genre, from influence to influence, but I’m incredibly proud of that. In a world where there is a chart full of carbon copy solo-artists, this is me (and the track) not wanting to cave in.

The singer mentions Tame Impala, Foals and Black Sabbath amongst the recent influences. Quite a mix! The experimenting with the sound brings more psychedelic vibes in to that catchy indie-pop of his.

I’ve challenged and pushed myself further than I have ever done before, and “One Of Us” marks the start of what’s to come.

After hearing these lyrics a couple of times

Told you ten thousand times
That you’d rather be one of us

You just want to say Yes, please. Can we be friends now?

But of course, no one can resist the charm of some good oldies. Everyone gets to jump to the well-known keys and tambourine sequences of the song From Nowhere and sings along when the band finishes the set off with the track Home. Just one word. Unremittingly and repeatedly. Over and over again. Home.

It’s so sweet, sweet

Spreading some rumours at the end. During our quick conversation Dan revealed the next year will hold a few surprises. Starting with the new single in January or February (hopefully) and some small number of shows there will be the right time to release that highly anticipated second album.

Well, Mr. Croll we certainly cannot wait!
