LIVE // GEORGE TAYLOR, The Hospital Club London
London-based singer-songwriter George Taylor performed at London’s Hospital Club last Thursday night as part of The Secret Sessions.
George Taylor kicked the set off with 2017 single I Hear Your Song, Sweetness which was delivered with authority and genuine warmth. Its quieter moments allowed him to display his vocal talent from the get-go and judging by the amount of nodding heads in the audience – very well received. The set rolled nicely into songs Higher and The Youth before a brilliant version of Bob Dylan’s Don’t Think Twice.
I have to commend George for his relaxed attitude to his untimely memory loss during Somewhere when he forgot some words and needed a few moments to get going again. It came across more as an endearing by-product of live music rather than a musician unprepared. Panic over!
I thoroughly enjoyed the set and I think he has a bright future if the reaction of the evening’s audience is anything to go by, hefty chants of “one more song!” could not go ignored at the end. He humbly picked up his guitar, and after some deliberation, effortlessly strummed into a fantastic version of Walk On The Wild Side.
Crowds in Central London can often feel a little demanding and expectant, so to have the masses asking for more is a review in itself. I’d like to see him spread his wings a little more and find his groove to ensure he’s set apart from the vast swathes of Ed Sheeran sound-alikes, but I will be looking forward to see him play again in the future.
