Live: BENJAMIN CLEMENTINE // O2 Academy Brixton, London

Is it really possible to expect anything normal at a Benjamin Clementine show? The answer is always assured once sat live, facing the wonderfully strange man on stage.

Benjamin Clementine is surrounded by dark ambient red and orange lighting decorated with various human mannequins, while his face lit with a single spotlight. This dark setting makes for a perfect introduction to his art, matching it visually.

His voice speaks so delicately but his haunting screams send goosebumps all over your arms. With such a wide range of sharp juxtapositions within his music, Clementine is an act you can’t take your eyes off.

Halfway through his chilling set, the artist gets off the stage and in front of the barrier, shouting one singular word that no one can quite understand. He slowly graces his way to the end of the barrier before dissolving into the crowd, leaving everyone quite puzzled by his behaviour.

However quirky and niche the musicians is, there is a strong intimacy within the 4900 capacity crowd. His theatrics performance allows engagement from the audience, sharing a few words and chuckles.

The ending is clear, as the music starts to wind down and Clementine slowly dismantles a body part from each mannequin before taking a standing ovation bow.
