Live: VANCE JOY // O2 Academy Brixton, London

Vance Joy warmed the hearts of a sold-out crowd last Wednesday at O2 Academy Brixton.

The Australian singer showcased songs off of his new album Nation Of Two, released 23 February, as well as beloved hits off of his debut album Dream Your Life Away.

A five-piece band opened the stage with an extended intro before Vance Joy took the stage. His folk sound effortlessly paired with the building sound as they transitioned into Fire And The Flood.

The rest of the set fluctuated between slower, more thoughtful pieces like From Afar and energized songs such as Like Gold. The crowd was incredibly responsive to Vance, singing along new songs as well as screaming to old ones. Highlights included a sweeping rendition of Georgia and an emotional solo performance of I’m With You.

Vance Joy’s vocal range was on display during the entire set. The venue allowed for the singer to show the true power behind his voice. He effortlessly held long notes and sang higher tones on key. This amazing performance kept the buzz going throughout the packed venue during the set, and came to an invigorating performance of Mess Is Mine to end the planned set.

The crowd quickly forced the singer back onto the stage for the encore, where Vance played his 2017 single Lay It On Me. To end the night, Vance Joy showcased his 2013 hit Riptide. The crowd was given renewed energy and the feeling in the venue was electric. The influence this song and its accompanying ukulele melody had on the audience was phenomenal, and the night ended in deafening applause.

London is sure to anxiously await Vance Joy’s return on 13 November at Alexandra Palace.
