Live: REX ORANGE COUNTY // Palace Theatre, St. Paul, MN
With a line wrapped around the block on a cold Sunday night, Rex Orange County’s dedicated fans showed their support by selling out the Palace Theatre.
This show beautifully showcased songs from his newest album Pony and highlighted the singer’s gentle vocals and relatable lyrics.
Rex Orange County, stage name of Alex O’Connor, took to the stage at 8pm preceded by no opener. At first, this decision seemed unconventional, but it soon became clear that the support for Alex was strong enough, not needing any sort of prep for the audience.
Alternating between his seat behind the keyboard and bouncing across the turf-covered stage, Alex’s demeanor was fun and light, providing comfort to those who were feeling the loss of Kobe Bryant. After taking the time to express his sadness, Alex urged the audience to make sure to love those around them.
Halfway through his set the curtain dropped, separating Alex from his band. This more reserved, slower section allowed for the lyrics of his songs to shine through and offered a beautiful moment for him to connect with his audience. And the crowd knew every word.
As the night came to a close with a few favorites like Best Friend and It’s Not the Same Anymore, the energy picked up once more. When he finally made his exit after a one-song encore, I’m sure almost all of his fans had full hearts and strained voices.
