JOAN Stun With Emotional Single ‘not over you’
Reflecting the song’s sorrowful lyricism and sonics, Alan Benjamin Thomas is bathed in blue as he sings the chorus in this visceral music video.
Consisting of Alan Benjamin Thomas and Steven Rutherford, joan are an adored indie two-piece from Arkansas, USA. Their debut EP portra, which was released in 2019, and last year’s EP cloudy have amassed over 90 million streams. With over a million monthly listeners across streaming platforms, joan also possess a devoted fanbase and social media following.
After the release of their irresistibly joyful EP hi in November, joan have recently released their second EP bye, as a follow-up to the first project. Whilst hi explores the first stages of love and infatuation, which envelop you in giddiness and hope, bye illustrates the heartache caused by relationships coming to an end.
The lead single from bye is entitled not over you and this poignant track is their final song of 2021. On a bed of melancholy piano melodies and alongside gentle vocal harmonies, the resonant chorus “I’m not over you, but I’m trying to get over you” plays out.
joan speak on the single:
we had a completely different song that we thought would be the last installment of the bye ep, and then this song came out of nowhere and hit us in the chest. the hook is so simple, but somehow hits harder every time you hear it – ‘i’m not over you, but i’m trying to get over you’ – ooof. it turned out to be one of our absolute favorites we’ve ever written. we hope it comforts you if you need comfort, and we hope it can help you if you need a good cry.
Undoubtedly, 2021 has been an exciting and extremely busy year for joan, with an abundance of releases and achievements. 2022 is more than likely to be as successful for the beloved duo as they are set to embark on an extensive US tour from February to March.
