Acknowledging the power of friendship, especially in regard to mental health, this music video beautifully supports the poignant lyricism and emotional themes of the song.

21-year-old New Zealander BENEE merges alt-pop sensibilities with sincere observations of suburban Auckland life and quirky lyricism. After her breakthrough with the smash hit and viral TikTok sound Supalonely, BENEE released her critically-acclaimed debut album Hey u x in 2020, which featured Grimes, Lily Allen, Flo Milli, Gus Dapperton and fellow New Zealand native Muroki.

At the end of October, BENEE stunned with the release of her profound single Doesn’t Matter and now, in December, she has unveiled equally stunning visuals to accompany the track. Explaining the inspiration behind the song, BENEE states:

It was a period when I felt truly overwhelmed, anxious, and stuck. I was diagnosed with OCD, which actually helped me understand myself better. This song ponders on what it would be like to feel truly carefree and how much easier life would be.

Co-directed and co-written by BENEE and actress and director Aidee Walker, the music video for Doesn’t Matter draws inspiration from vintage French indie films and exquisitely captures introspective moments in relation to BENEE’s mental health and diagnosis with OCD. Switching between colour and black-and-white shots, this music video portrays BENEE driving in her yellow convertible with a canine passenger, before tearfully picking up a friend and going to the beach where she sings against a tranquil backdrop.

‘Doesn’t Matter’ is about how hard it can be to explain your feelings and emotions to people. Sometimes friends just being there for you is such a help. I’m so excited about this video; it was my first shot at co-directing with Aidee Walker. I came up with the concept, and she helped me bring it to life. I wanted the look of an old French indie film with a twist….and I love how it turned out.

Along with a forthcoming EP release, BENEE is set to embark on her biggest ever global tour which begins in Sweden at the end of April 2022, for the UK and Europe leg of the tour, and will eventually conclude in June in LA, during the North American leg, with special guest Dreamer Boy. At last, BENEE will be able to showcase her irresistible music to international audiences filled with her dedicated fans.
