Live: TYLER, THE CREATOR // Target Center, Minneapolis, MN
Tyler, The Creator stopped through Minneapolis this past weekend on his Call Me If You Get Lost tour, with support from Kali Uchis, Vince Staples and Teezo Touchdown.

An amazing lineup of openers warmed up the crowd for Tyler, The Creator. Despite a 45-minute delay in doors, Teezo Touchdown began right on time. Dressed in a quasi-construction outfit, complete with an impressive amount of nails braided into his hair, Teezo’s high-energy set was quirky and highly memorable.

Next came a riveting performance from Vince Staples. Sticking to the B stage, his simple stage design and presence allowed his lyrics to speak on their own. Toward the end of his set, he paused to reflect on the size of the crowd, his face lighting up in gratitude.

The third and final opener Kali Uchis put on a phenomenal display for the audience, with many fans in the pit chanting her name before the lights came up. Leaning into religious themes and imagery, Uchis began her set center stage with her hands above her head. A group of dancers dressed in red to match slowly approached her, crawling on hands and knees. Throughout the set they added color and artistry to her music. Highlights included a rendition of popular SAD GIRLZ LUV MONEY before ending her set with telepatía.

When it was time for Tyler, The Creator to take the stage shortly before 10, the entire arena was ready. The sense of anticipation in the arena was palpable. As Tyler slowly rose from beneath the stage in a Rolls-Royce, the crowd went wild. After a moment, he rocketed into SIR BAUDELAIRE off of 2021’s CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST. The beginning of the set was a celebration of his latest album as he cycled through the first handful of songs.
As he made his way to the B stage, Tyler “surfed” between the pit on a speedboat, rocking back and forth to WUSYANAME. This was the first of many moments when I was left thinking, “wow, this is a performance.” Hitting his stride during See You Again off of 2017’s Flower Boy, Tyler bounded back and forth across the platform and had the entire room jumping along. Throughout the set the younger crowd held onto his every word, it was impressive to see such dedication and attention in the audience. It felt as though everyone entered the venue with a carefree, post-Omicron wave attitude, ready to dance along with an amazing performer.
In typical fashion, Tyler ended his set with his current popular tunes, complete with pyrotechnics (this is an arena tour, after all). EARFQUAKE and NEW MAGIC WAND elicited the loudest singalongs from the crowd, making us wish we had caught the IGOR tour in late 2019. Tyler is truly a one of a kind performer and artist. Everything from the visuals to its openers felt thought out and curated with the fans’ experience in mind.
