Live: WET LEG // First Avenue, Minneapolis, MN

Isle of Wight newcomers Wet Leg put on a mesmerizing First Avenue debut last week, marking the second stop on their sold-out US tour.

It is amazing to see how far Wet Leg has come in such a short time, having only just released their first single Chaise Longue in June 2021. The duo, composed of Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, offers an entirely unique and refreshing musical experience. Their debut album is set for release on April 8th, a date that can’t come soon enough.

Just before their set began, Teasdale and Chambers exchanged a tender moment under dim lighting. Teasdale wiped away tears while Chambers reassured her, and the audience looked on, cheering all the while. To share such an authentic moment of emotion with the crowd to which they were about to perform was amazing. In this moment, and surely long before, the audience was completely won over.

What followed was a remarkable 16-song set. The first song recognizable by fans was Wet Dream, played third in the setlist. It is impressive to perform a set of almost entirely unreleased songs. Those in attendance felt honored to hear these songs for the first time in a live setting (and despite the desire to record songs for playback, hardly anyone had their phones out). As the night went on, Teasdale and Chambers seemed to loosen up. During Too Late Now, the duo twirled around at perfectly timed intervals. Big smiles and laughter were exchanged, and the energy in the room bubbled.

At one point, the band eased into a slow jam, transitional moment. Teasdale greeted the crowd, “Welcome to the Wet Leg experience.” Shortly after, she sternly commanded, “Relax,” followed by a joking, “Are you relaxed yet?” This casual and familiar tone continued through the remainder of the set before the group ended with their wildly popular Chaise Longue. Teasdale sang to the audience in a playful call and response, “Excuse me?” followed by the audience screaming, “What?”

As their set went on, I became more in awe of Wet Leg and the concert they were crafting. It felt as though everyone in the room had happened upon something extraordinary, purely by luck. The combination of their newness, one-of-a-kind sound, and the timing of their rise contributes to an anticipatory feeling that is hard to describe. This concert is one of the best I have ever attended, and I have no doubt that Wet Leg will continue adding to their already impressive list of achievements.
