SUGARTHIEF New Song Review // “New Ends”
SUGARTHIEF release debut single New Ends.
Alright, I think I must say it again that apparently Birmingham is a place to start a band.
Sugarthief are an indie band based out of Birmingham, formed by two brothers – Jack (Guitar) and Jordi James (Lead vocals & Guitar), later adding school friends Luke Owen (Bass) and Reece Downton (Drums).
It had’t been even a week since the release of New Ends when the song got its first play on the radio. The track, picked up by BBC Introducing WM, is a perfect indie-pop banger that will get you up on your feet.
First, that catchy chorus – no chance you’re getting it out of your head any time soon. But yep, you can always try. Second, the bass line with up-tempo riffs create the rhythmic sequence that blends easily with building up drums holding the entire structure in a steady frame. Third, those vocals of course. The distinctive timbre adds a lot of charisma to the entire harmony and oh have you heard that guitar solo? Brilliant.
Despite the fact that New Ends deliver mostly happy vibes, the meaning behind the single is rather sad. Listen to the track below and keep your eye on these guys! Pretty sure they’ve got a lot more to show us.
It’s about naive or delusional people that are trying to convince themselves something will happen when they know it won’t.
