THE AMAZONS Gig Review // Flying Vinyl Festival
THE AMAZONS play a smashing set at Flying Vinyl Festival at SHAPES Hackney in London.
Before we move on to the topic I’ve got a confession to make. In the last couple of weeks I’ve considered closing this website down. A few times, actually. The reason for that was quite simple. All bands would sound the same to me. I had a feeling that I’d run out of words. An awful and scary feeling, you know.
But luckily, I’ve come across this next band.
My faith in music is now restored and I’m pretty sure I’m not done yet and I’ve still got something to say. All words are being spilled out again.
But enough about me. The festival season has just begun starting with Flying Vinyl Fest which took place on April 8 at SHAPES in Hackney. I will have some more about the entire event but for now I would like you to have a closer look at the performance of the favourite band from the line-up – The Amazons who owned the stage.
The Amazons kick off big with the track Burn My Eyes and the crowd literally wakes up. Let me tell you, it looked really sleepy during the previous act. The infectious chorus of their latest single Stay With Me starts to echo across the room letting Thomson to display his deep vocal range and fans burst into loud cheers and some sing along.
Reading four-piece smoothly moves on to the next one – Night Driving and you realise every song is a potential hit. Alderton‘s strong and mad guitar riffs easily blend into Emmett‘s urgently building up drums whilst Briggs creates a solid frame with his steady bass line. Let’s add some more of those towering high notes and you get haunting and melodic rock sequences.
At this point the audience has totally woken up and it appears that it’s the tracks taken from their Do You Wanna? EP (Oct 2015) that sound the loudest. The ones crowd has been waiting for. The lyrics Junk food forever Late nights together Jackets and leather perfectly fit the mood when the singer admits that wearing jackets might have not been the best idea – FIY it is extremely hot in the room (and no, it’s not just because of the band). The catchy Ultraviolet brings more screams and more people to the middle of the floor with the most dedicated moshers doing their thing and a few “Matt, I love you!” from the audience. You know, being in the photo pit very often gets very interesting. You hear things. A LOT of things.
But we’re heading towards the end. The Amazons finish it off with some nuts headbanging and a brilliant guitar solo of the track Something In The Water and they’re off.
It is always tricky to play at festivals. Especially, when it’s a one day thing with a bunch of bands. The set is shorter, you need to make sure every song counts. Plus, a lot of people come down to see their faves and many don’t care about the rest. But if you actually pay attention you might find yourself the one that really stands out and makes a difference.
As for playing a 5pm slot at an indoor festival at the beginning of April in London where the spring is still far away what makes this whole festival season seem like even further away – The Amazons totally smashed it. Looking forward to seeing what they do next. And a word of advice here – you better find yourself a nice place in that tribe of theirs ’cause you might deeply regret not doing so later on.
I also had a chat with the lads so come back in a few days to read some more. Now have a look below at some sweets live shots from their set!
