ALEXIS KINGS New EP Review // “Squire”
ALEXIS KINGS release new EP Squire.
If you’re still lookong for that summery soundtrack, then you just have found one.
New Squire EP sees Alexis Kings shift imperceptibly towards more melodic sounds and higher-energy guitar hooks. A differing selection of upbeat rhythms and slower tempos with each track telling its individual story. We’ve got a summer love in the main single Squire, Britpop vibes filling Chivalry up, infectiously dark Morning Dianna, thanks to cohesive guitars with a pinch of funk, and a jolly in a way Strawberry Blonde. A broad entirety of blues undertones with an overlay of gritty guitar sounds and the raw husky vocals of Brendan Aherne.
Recorded in Lincoln at Chapel Studios, home to such records as Arctic Monkey’s Whatever People Say I am, That’s What I’m Not and Catfish And The Bottlemen’s The Balcony, the new EP was produced by Chris West, who worked on Richard Ashcroft’s record, Keys To The World.
The whole EP is based around certain experiences that we believe everyone can relate to or has been through at one time or another – the band explains. Essentially, it was inspired by the stories of growing up and we feel it has got its originality but also a good variety of sounds between the four tracks.
The lead track Squire, the follow-up to their highly successful single, and fan favourite Sugar Darlin’, perfectly captures the summer vibe spreading its unique melodic harmonies.
Predominantly, the track was written about a short lasting summer love, a reflection of the good times we all have in that season. But the story comes second to its vibe. This is why we made a good effort with the music video, travelling to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Brugge and Antwerp filming a road trip over a few days. Writing a song for the summer is something that we have always wanted to do, and we couldn’t be happier with how it has come out and the response it has had already.
Alexis Kings have recently unveiled new clip for the second single taken from Squire EP, Strawberry Blonde. Here’s more from the band about the track itself.
This song is actually about two things which are completely different but have been written to work together to make a very emotive chorus. For how it sounds, it’s simply about being out on the session with your friends. You know, those nights that you never want to end as you see the sun come up with a drink in your hand, the ones for the history books. But it is also about almost losing a close friend to the illness which happened during writing the song.
Both meanings however make it a very moving song which is purely about your mates and the times you have together or the times that you will remember having together. This is undoubtedly the song which generates the best atmosphere live.
The diversity in sound amongst the songs is something that we love. One thing we pride ourselves on is distinguishing a catchy melody in all of our songs along with melodic riffs which are easy to listen too. But everything you hear was made to take you to a certain place or experience that you can relate to the feeling of the song.
The British four-piece is expected to announce details for a nationwide tour across the UK later this year in support of the new record.
The Squire EP is out now on Ditto Music.
