WHENYOUNG Share Visuals for ‘Given Up’
The Limerick band is set to release their debut EP Given Up this November.
whenyoung never cease to surprise, as they unveil new single, Given Up, taken from their debut EP which will be released on November 9th through Virgin EMI. The track follows their recent singles Heaven On Earth and their cover of the Cranberries classic Dreams.
Shot in the iconic Peckham Liberals Club and directed by Dazed editorial director, Bunny Kinney, the video transports us into the room of a bored teenager from the suburbs in its opening sequence. We first meet the band through the TV screen in the teenager’s room. As time passes, two storylines merge into one as the protagonist makes the effort to see whenyoung play live and is confronted face to face with the singer. The video has a washed out, old yet a temporal feel to it, with red accents permeating the screen, signifying perhaps the burning will to re-take control of one’s own life.
In the band’s own words:
‘Given Up’ was written after a series of late nights and self-inflicted misdirection. The central message is to take your life by the reins and create your own future.
Throughout the video, multiple stories of regular night owls are told, depicting in a somewhat romanticised way the downsides of the drink and drug-taking scene, all to the effervescent, almost obsessively repetitive chorus.
The bridge is accentuated by a changing cinematography – darker tones and flashing lights mimic those of a nightclub, as the teenager and the singer finally face each other. It feels as though Aoife is trying to encourage the teenager to take her life into her own hands and make the right choices as she sings “It’s your world and you create it / Just remove the parts you hated.”
We love whenyoung’s take on the eternal question of “What is the right way to lead a life?” and we hope that we are in fact living, and not just existing.
