Live: BARNS COURTNEY // Heaven, London
In a whirlwind of bluesy and rock ‘n’ roll tunes, Barns Courtney brings a grand finale to his UK tour as he takes to the stage at London’s Heaven.
From an avalanche of balloons and surprising guest appearance, to a glorious confetti rain, we were sent off on a wild journey to Barns Courtney‘s musical realm last Thursday. With his debut album The Attractions Of Youth racking up over 200,000 album sales to date and previous sold-out UK tours, the set he delivered was sure to exceed our expectations.
Strongly charismatic and self-confident, Barns have quickly cemented his position as a multitalented singer-songwriter and great live performer, and yet his last week’s show elevated him to new heights. Swaggering on to the stage in a leather-jacket true rock star glam, he had the audience in the palm of his hand from the very start.
Accompanied by his brilliant live band, Barns poured every ounce of energy into his performance. With every song kicking in, his dedication and precision was truly palpable. Strumming off an acoustic guitar, his nostalgia-inducing latest single 99 took us on a trip down memory lane with many voices joining in for a singalong chorus and some bashful hip sways here and there.
With a knack for marrying classic elements with modern sonics, Hands brought along pounding beats and electrifying guitars which sent shivers down our spines, whilst Never Let You Down struck with emotional rawness that exposed Barns’ broad vocal range in an endearing manner.
Balancing between weighty, thumping rhythmics of Glitter & Gold and his more reflective, melodic side in Golden Dandelions, Barns made sure his interactions with the crowd were on-point throughout the night. In between hand shakes with his fans and bold dance moves, he still had a few surprises up his sleeve. Spinning brand new track London Girls, it only seemed suitable to release a batch of colourful balloons which flooded the room, just to witness the artist grandson jumping on to the stage for Kicks, which continued the mayhem that had already taken over Heaven.
Daring to stage dive and crowd surf, we lost Barns disappearing in a confetti rain as Fire brought the end to his dynamic and racing set.
Channelling passion for past era with a fresh take on current musical input, Barns Courtney has been pushing boundaries and moving forward against all the odds that life has put in front of him. Armed in a well-crafted repertoire, his shows ooze with charm and charisma alongside infectious energy that reaches each and every person gathered in the room he plays. With the year coming to an end, we can’t wait to see what future holds for this young musician.
