Live: CLAIRO // Varsity Theater, Minneapolis, MN
Clairo played an intimate, sold-out show last Wednesday night at Varsity Theater.
The young artist played to an even younger crowd of fans, who turned up with high spirits despite the rain.
Claire Cottrill took to the stage after the first few notes of Alewife. The fans in front knew every word and were thrilled when the lights and energy were brought up for the next song Impossible. A favorite off of the singer’s 2019 debut album Immunity, Impossible was just one of many songs that hit hard that night. Clairo utilized the crowd’s enthusiasm to build energy throughout the set. Whenever there was a silence, the room was filled with cheers and screams.
The set slowed down for a stripped back rendition of Bubblegum. This moment allowed for Clairo to showcase her gorgeous voice in the live setting. Energy was quickly brought back up for North. Another highlight of the show was its visuals. Dreamy pastels, a large semi-circle screen showing old stock footage, and white platforms and mic stands all functioned to create a cohesive visual experience.
One couldn’t help but notice how the crowd enhanced each song. For an artist who features backing vocals and ambient noise in her tracks, the live setting allowed for a direct connection to the studio recordings. For the encore, Clairo performed 2017’s viral hit Pretty Girl and recent single I Don’t Think I Can Do This Again.
Clairo’s continues her North American tour through November before finishing out the year in the UK/EU.
