GENGAHR rock out at Scala London

Do you want to know a secret? Of course, you do. I’ve counted and apparently, the band with the highest number of posts on this blog are Gengahr. To be honest, this is relatively new website so I reckon this means a lot. Oh well, I regret nothing.

Not long since I saw the group performing live for the very first time. I believe they were supporting Circa Waves at O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire earlier this year. Then they played amazing set in House of Vans alongside Sunset Sons and if I’m correct, the exact next day they opened ‘A Collection Of Artworks’ – the exhibition based on a collaboration with other musicians friends. Subsequently, they were just dropping new music videos and EPs without any warning. One by one. Thus, as you can see in my case it’s fairly young love but I can tell you already – I am never falling out of it.

And now after travelling with other bands Gengahr has kicked off with their own headline tour. Playing at Scala in London last Thursday the band met everyone’s expectations.

Frankly speaking, when at a gig I always look around and study people’s face expressions and restless bodies. The greatest moment is when you wait for the band you admire (and love in most cases) to go onstage and you know it will happen any time now. All that uneasiness and excitement amongst the crowd! I love it!

Opening with the track Loki taken out of the new EP Tired Eyes Gengahr bring all the soothing harmonies to life. Only then you realize everyone’s going crazy and it’s certainly not about calmness. Perhaps, I scream a bit too loud when I hear the first notes of my all time favourite Heroine. Although, the blissful Fill My Gums With Blood gets me really dancing around the room what however, comparing to John Victor’s head banging all over the stage seems nothing. No time and place for holding back. Nope. The whole band radiate with ethereal energy and solid stage presence. Their charisma and confidence won’t let go unnoticed.

Between dreamy Embers, low tempo Dark Star and brilliant Powder I can hear a couple of shouts “I love you!” (Obviously. How can you not?) whilst ending the entire set with She’s a Witch is a pure delight.

As for me, I think the unsettling nature of Gengahr’s music is very settling and comforting.

Deluxe version of the debut album A Dream Outside was released October 1.
