MATT WOODS Gig Review

Matt Woods delivers beautiful performance at The Social in London.

Sometimes it takes only one song to change it all.

My soul is very loud but you know that already. I guess, it’s just that rock & roll nature. Yes, definitely. This is why it screams most of the time. I really hope that’s the reason. However, I can never be sure.

Nevertheless, when another human being is able to calm it down, my attention is fully his. I can’t remember when it’s been so peaceful. What do I do now? Mr. Woods, can I please have my soul back?

Just joking. Keep it. Not much of a use now since shattered.

I’d like to keep the heart though.

As you already know, I went to see Adam French at The Social last week. Lovely guy, we had a chat about music, gigs and future plans etc. I  remember being very busy on that day – ’cause birthday and stuff but as we all agreed it’s time to start deducting passing years from now on. Anyway, my point is that probably, the first time in my life I actually overlooked the supporting act. It kind of skipped my attention. I’m still trying to figure out how that happened. But it might have been for the better, you know.

Perhaps, as Andy Warhol used to say – I know, I know it’s him again. I can’t help it. My obsession has only grown stronger – Sometimes the little times you don’t think are anything while they’re happening turn out to be what marks a whole period of your life. Obviously, that’s huge statement which applies to huge moments in life, I suppose [despite the fact he was talking about a car ride to a ball] but you see, music is that huge moment in my life. Everlasting moment. And I think there might be some shifting going to happen very soon.

Cornwall born and raised with an experience in some classical training, Matt Woods delivers a wide range of strong vocals going from deep husky timbre to high falsetto in an instant. Beautifully arranged acoustic pop of his creates the atmosphere of soothing and mesmerizing harmonies which simply flood the room. The crowd is hypnotized with no intention on moving anywhere. His distinctive sound, passion and honesty of the lyrics definitely stand out on the current music scene and I’ve got a feeling there are much better things waiting to be unveiled. Diversity in its simplicity.

I knew in a moment I would have to spend some time re-arranging my playlist so there’d be room for him to stay.

The only awful thing that was bugging me throughout the entire set was the sound of my camera lens. The audience was so quiet, barely breathing, just that horrible camera noise.

I am yet to figure out one thing, though. Like you know, on one hand people say We don’t believe in words, we just love the way they sound. But also, I live by the rule Don’t talk unless you can improve the silence. So as you can imagine I’m a little bit confused and lost here because I really need to believe in lyrics and I do need to know that people like him exists.

It’s been a while since so many of my favourite quotations came back to my mind. Which is good. I guess I need to swipe the dust from my bookshelves but no more Andy Warhol, I promise.

Maybe our favourite quotations say more about us than about the stories and people we’re quoting.

Make sure to catch Matt Woods playing live on the first occasion you get. You won’t be disappointed. Now see photos of the last week show and listen to some great music below. Your soul will thank you.
