Interview // GET INUIT
We can’t wait for people to hear it – GET INUIT reflect on their new material.
I caught up with 2/4 of the band Get Inuit after their show at The Dome Tufnell Park in London to talk about touring with VANT, their time in the studio and all those things we can expect from them in the near future.
Life is pretty good at the moment – states the lead singer of the band, Jamie Glass. No complaints from me.
We’re not too tired yet – James Simpson [lead guitar] says. We’ve only done three shows so far and we’ve got another eight to do.
Still very face-freshed – Jamie adds.
The well-being checked then. What about the tour and the crowd?
Sometimes it’s nice to do these small shows – James continues. We played in a quite small room in Bristol but it was really fun. A couple of people had been to our shows before, they sort of got in the front, did a little headbanging. It’s really fun to see people coming back. We love that.
But it hasn’t been long since this Kent four-piece put their feet back on the homeland ground. It hasn’t been long since they were shaking people and places at SXSW in Austin, Texas.
I’m still kind of on a come down from it – says Jamie. I still haven’t recovered and it was like a month ago. Every time I think about it – it was like actually one of the highlights of my life. So many good bands. Plus the Sun. We played a sold out show, some people were outside and couldn’t get in. We couldn’t have asked for better time.
Any good/weird stories to share?
I don’t know about weird but we were about 20 metres from a gun shot.. – Jamie begins.
And that was pretty scary – James continues. 600 people came running down the street, people falling over, girls screaming and we were like “What’s going on?” and then some guy said “It’s a gun..” Then we saw the police coming down on horses and spraying everyone.. That was pretty exciting. It was over after like two minutes and everyone was like “Oh let’s go and see more bands”. It was really strange.
But apparently that’s not all. After giving it a thought even more interesting stories come to their minds including their manager dancing to an old fashioned British song. As they say – seeing that was really surreal. But we agreed on not quoting any names or titles.
SXSW sounds definitely fun!
A lot of British bands did really well – James remarks. It was nice to see.
Fickle Friends, Fizzy Blood, Clean Cut Kid land on that list but also NY locals – Sunflower Bean which Jamie has been raving about ever since.
The last time I was catching up with the band they were heading into the studio. Obviously, I wonder how it’s been.
So far so good – states Jamie.
We have “headed” into the studio – James adds. We might have headed back a little bit more but we’re over the hill now. We’ve done the big hump. Now we’re just climbing up and doing all cherries on top of it.
The ice cream is good – Jamie cuts in. Now we need to do thousands of sprinkles on top. It’s pretty much there. We can’t wait for people to hear it.
Yes. It’s exciting and scary – James sums up. But mostly exciting
I love all the metaphors but when will people be able to hear it?
There will definitely be some of it heard this year – starts James. I can 100% say that. I hope.
At least some small part of it this year – Jamie confirms. I promise.
While we’re on the studio matter let’s discuss it a little bit more. Is the songwriting process any different or is it more like “same old, same old” situation?
I don’t think it has changed at all – says the singer. It’s very much how it was. Normally, I come up with a foundation and then I take it to James and the rest of the band who add their bits and make it much more listenable..
James laughs – It’s not true but the only thing we’ve done a tiny bit different was that this time we’ve got to experiment a bit more with the studio. More than we had done previously just because we had more time and we were able to concentrate that way. But essentially it’s the same – Jamie does the vocal for the melody writing before we come in, then we add the drums and then I do lots of production.
And as it appears there’s mostly love amongst them.
My brother [the drummer] and I are fighting – says James. But it doesn’t even get too physical. Maybe a little bit of wrestling. Jamie and I have like occasional disagreement in the studio.
It’s passive – Jamie agrees. When I need to sleep I just pinch him.
As you can see it’s pretty good to be in this band at the moment. And with summer festival season approaching there’s even more reasons to get excited about. As the band admit – Hopefully the weather is getting better. But yes, a lot of summer festivals – some that we can talk about, some that are still in the works. Pretty much every weekend we’re gonna be busy.
We’re looking forward to that – James sums up. It’s nice to get outside.
We talk some more and I try to find out what these guys are up to whilst out of the music zone [if possible]. As it turns out Jamie is a Game of Thrones fan hoping to catch up with all seasons before new episodes come out. I watched two seasons in about three days which is pretty good but I still have a lot more to do – he says.
James, on the other hand, is more into House of Cards. I went from I-have-never-watched-it to watching all four seasons in like four days [we’ve all been there]. Pretty intense. I live less busy life. There’s plenty of time.
My life is not busy – Jamie replies. Normally, I’m just rolling up T-shirts from merchandise. It’s pretty much all I do.
I think we can all agree on this being quite a big understatement. Good job with the T-shirts, though!
But of course, we’re back on the music track.
I’d say out of everyone who puts songs in a van Jamie is my favourite – James ponders. He never goes too self-involved. There are some other people who sometimes make me want to jump through the door when they play theirs. Jamie is really good at keeping it all on a playlist. And as they reveal they might have heard some of VANT’s new stuff, there’s always Fickle Friends’ and Clean Cut Kid’s tracks on it, some Day Wave – what makes me recall his latest music video for the song Stuck featuring Mark Hoppus.
Our bassist would love it! – James mentions. He’s a massive Blink-182 fan.
Aren’t we all?
Get Inuit are joining Spring King on their immense UK tour this month so make sure you go and pay them a visit!
As for the show – brilliant as per and even better than sweet photos you can see below.
