THE MAGIC GANG Gig Review // Scala
THE MAGIC GANG play a triumphant set at London’s Scala.
The Brighton’s four-piece has been on everybody’s ones-to-watch list for more than a year now but these recent months have undoubtedly moved them closer to the top. They’ve released a noteworthy The Second EP From, they’ve signed with Warner Music and they’ve embarked on their biggest headline tour to date.
With a bountiful and thrilling performance at London’s Scala last week The Magic Gang proved that they’re not only a phenomenal live act but they’ve still got much more to offer.
The band kick off with upbeat guitars of the track Lady Please and fans react in the only way they know. Loud screams echo in the room as the quartet presents more songs from their EP (Jan 2016). Swaying vibes of She Doesn’t See smoothly turns into Jasmine as the crowd impressively sings back all the lyrics Jasmine, it’s true / I waited here for you / Without this heart of mine / You’ll be doing fine.
The subject of hopeless romanticising continues as The Magic Gang spin Only Waiting (You were only waiting but I was only waiting for you) and their recent single All This Way (All I really wanna know / Is how I got all this way on my own). A vivid image of constant young-love struggle permanently living in their tracks which many people find very easily relatable.
Whilst the co-vocalists, Jack Kaye and Kristian Smith, ingeniously tower over the notes, Taylor‘s sleek bass lines and Giles‘ vigorous drums keep a tight rein on rhythmical structure.
The Magic Gang present a galore set list composed of some new tunes, No One Else, and many fan favourites, She Won’t Ghost and Feeling Better. However, it is fair to say that each track feels like a fan favourite. With only two EPs in their arsenal and debut album in the works, this band has clearly one of the most devoted following bases.
People simply go nuts for them. Having seen this four-piece performing a high number of times already, only strengthened my belief that they’ve been getting better and better. The band and the crowd respectively. I spot a few flying bodies, a few individuals bravely attempting to commit a stage invasion and of course a never-ending moshing.
The young band has been growing substantially within this passing year. The Magic Gang have already established an idiosyncratic sound world of theirs which you can hear in one of their most outstanding tracks such as All That I Want Is You and new offering taken from their second EP, Blue For You. A somehow soothing melancholy brought to life by impeccable strings and euphonious harmonies.
As we head towards the end of the set, the band play their debut single. The track Alright, still sounding fresh and engaging, and No Fun which makes a grand finale as Kaye drops his guitar and confidently decides to stage dive. Quickly after that the entire band disappears backstage leaving the audience with a feeling of wanting for more.
The Magic Gang are certainly one of those bands who keep your hope in new emerging talents far from fading away. At least that’s what they are to me and I am pretty positive they haven’t revealed all of their magic just yet.
