MEW Reveal Quirky New Tune ‘Twist Quest’
The Danish trio is back with another mesmerising tune taken from their forthcoming studio album Visuals.
Twist Quest is the third single to be unveiled from the record and so far it sounds like a dream.
The tune opens with a gangly guitar-ridden melody, soon embarking into the dazed dreamscape that we’ve come to love from Mew. Twist Quest is filled with quirky surprises, shifting melodies and an immensely strong lyric to go along the adventurous melody. The gripping darkness of the lyrics does in many way contrast the lighter aspect of the soundscape creating a dual nature within the song.
The track also features a video, completed with lyric subtitles. The video follows up the kaleidoscopic theme from the previous releases of Visuals. Lead singer Jonas Bjerre explains his work of colours and shapes for the videos.
A picture of your messy desk turns into a strange flower. I like that you can’t really envision what it will look like until you see it. I think our music is a bit like that too – even as we’re working on it.
From what we’ve heard so far, Mew stay true to their spirit on Visuals. Yet they are bold enough to take on a new pallet and context, exploring their melodies in different aspects than previously witnessed from the trio.
As Bjerre explains:
This song took shape during a long jam session, like we hadn’t done in a long time. It’s a joyful song, with dark lyrics. I guess the song is about being confused, and unable to keep your mind still from all the stuff that floats around it. The expectations we put on ourselves. But also there’s a sense of celebration in it.
The seventh album Visuals will be out on April 28th via Play It Again Sam.
Mew have also announced European headline tour and you can catch them at the following dates:
21 – Bristol, Trinity
22 – Manchester, O2 Ritz
23 – London, O2 Shepherds Bush Empire
