OKAY CHAMP Astound with New Single ‘William Tell’
Okay Champ lead on from the success of their visceral debut with second single William Tell.
Newcastle outfit Okay Champ have released their atmospheric second single, William Tell.
Contrasting with their caustic debut The Party’s Over (Goodbye Yellow Brick Road), their second tune is sulky but no less intense. Opening with an unyielding, propulsive drum beat, the rhythm is hammered into the listener from the first beat. The repetition of it creates a primal feel, and this is expanded when the imposing isolated vocals of John Edgar join the texture. A tone of menace runs underneath the track, as disjointed electronics are sporadically scattered throughout. The reversing fuzzy guitars will make you feel as though you’re in a hallucinatory state.
Speaking about the track, John Edgar says:
The lyrics were born out of a nightmare I had. A lot of the [Okay] Champ lyrics are…It’s the antithesis of Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da by The Beatles. With a little nod to Rossini in there.
With the words being sung at a low vocal range, the nightmarish feel is perfectly captured in this equal parts haunting and hypnotising track. This gloom-fuzz troupe are one to keep on your radar, that’s for sure.
