Live: CYPRESS HILL // O2 Academy Brixton, London
Multi-platinum hip hop giants, Cypress Hill, embark on their biggest UK tour in over a decade.
With over 25 years of releases under their belt and Mix Master Mike added to their line-up, alongside legendary percussionist Eric Bobo, Cypress Hill delivered a career-spanning set as they stormed the stage at O2 Brixton last week.
Returning with their ninth studio album, Elephants On Acid, which marks the band’s first full-length record in eights years, the performance was a real treat for both old school and new fans. As a slick rap flow and sultry beats of Band Of Gypsies kicked things off, the crowd instantly went crazy for the hip hop heroes. Introducing more of their new material, Put Em In The Ground set the pace with building up rhythmics and palpable instrumentals before the fan favourites hit the ether.
Accompanied by the everlasting smell of weed, the enthusiasm and excitement did not seem to leave the audience, not even for a second. Whilst Latin Lingo and Tequila Sunrise channelled some of the band’s signature Latino American aesthetics, the absolute hits Dr. Greenthumb and Insane In The Brain had the whole room singing along and swaying to the synthesised beats and vibrant undertones. With a nostalgic tinge to it, the thumping beats of (Rock) Superstar brought the grand finale to their heated set.
Breathing a new life into the tracks that shaped the hip hop and rap scene in the past era, Cypress Hill surely live up to their phenomenal live reputation. As long as they continue to push their stylised rhythm and rhyming to new heights, their genre-defining legacy is sure to carry on for many generations to come.
