Live: MATT CORBY // O2 Forum Kentish Town, London

Hitting the road in support of his sophomore record Rainbow Valley, Australian singer-songwriter Matt Corby proved that his return was truly worth the wait.

It’s like he casts a spell on the crowd every time he takes to the stage.

With a great sense of authenticity and remarkable passion, Matt Corby graced us with a unique set on the first night of his two shows at London’s O2 Forum Kentish Town last week.

Blending the transcendent melodies of his earlier material and kaleidoscopic palette of sounds of Rainbow Valley, the performance was fascinating from start to finish. Inspired by a new found sense of balance and purpose, Corby made the live arrangement of every song seem natural and effortless and that projected into the audience in an excellent manner.

Accompanied by minimal aesthetics of the stage production, Matt’s sharp live skills and heart-warming vocals took centre stage the moment he revealed his presence. A glimpse into the technicolor world of his new record, No Ordinary Life spread a joyous mood in an instant, soaring on spacious and abundant textures. Finding extraordinary in ordinary moments, Corby brings swirling electronics and blissful harmonies together to shape a tale that will soothe your soul.

Smoothly gliding into All That I See, the swaying rhythm of the track quickly resonated with the audience as tranquil melodies and dulcet vocals symphonized. Bathed in a palpable vibrancy, the song serves as yet another glowing slice of futuristic psychedelia that the record encapsulates. With poise and grace, he moved onto the groovy instrumental masterpiece that is New Day Coming, before piano-led All That I See took it down a notch.

Elsewhere in the set, Sooth Lady Wine charmed the crowd with its choir-like harmonies and jazz-infused elements, whilst old school Brother accelerated the dynamics of the set, especially when Matt showcased his vocal range by going from a wailing falsetto to a growling timbre in a flash.

Heading towards the end of the show, the mellifluous Elements headed to collide with brooding Empires Attraction before the absolute hit Resolution hit the ether. His 2013 single is still the most jaw-dropping moment of his entire live performance. Emotionally-raw and vocal-wise, well simply insane, the track continues to set hearts racing whenever it’s being played.

Incorporating psych elements into his signature blues-influenced folk style, Matt Corby undoubtedly kicked off a new chapter with the release of Rainbow Valley. Pushing his boundaries without ever forgetting where he came from, he subtly took his artistry to the next level and his live shows are best to prove it.
