EP Review // HOT MILK ‘Are You Feeling Alive?’

On Are You Feeling Alive?, there is plenty of opportunity to determine Hot Milk’s style and see what all the buzz has been about.

Manchester quartet Hot Milk only released their first single this year, seemingly coming out of nowhere, but so far they’ve supported Papa Roach and You Me At Six on tour, and are set to support the legendary Foo Fighters for three shows and play Slam Dunk, Download, and Reading & Leeds. A lot of buzz for a small band, but they’ve proven that none of it is undeserved.

Hot Milk seriously impress right out of the gate with both male and female vocals intertwining perfectly, each getting their time to shine at the appropriate moments but not following a predictable pattern. Jim Shaw and Han Mee’s voices find the right balance and don’t make any of the songs feel like cheesy duet, which is a common risk when songs contain male and female vocalists. They describe their own sound as emo power-pop and the EP represents both sides of this self-proclaimed style well.

Title track Are You Feeling Alive? and opening track Wide Awake start out with an electronic pop vibe and transition into heavy emo guitar riffs. These heavy riffs are present throughout Awful Ever After and Take Your Jacket too, creating seriously catchy summer songs with a high danceability factor and a big IDGAF attitude that will rip through your speakers. I personally can’t wait to see them win over audiences during their festival run and work towards their first debut album.
