Live: WINSTON SURFSHIRT // Electric Brixton, London
Winston Surfshirt bring the funk to Brixton.
Australian band Winston Surfshirt brought their international tour to Electric Brixton, showcasing their easy going sound and multi-instrumental approach.
Their self-described stylistic influences include surf rock and West Coast hip hop, which makes for an interesting and dynamic experience. Formed in 2015, the six-piece includes lead vocalist Winston, Bustlip on beats, The Bone on trombone, Bik Julio on bass, Dool on keyboards and Mi-K on guitar.
With their easy-going sound, the band’s approach to their live show is no different. Every track is very danceable, but you won’t find yourself squished up in a hectic mosh pit. It was clear from the smiles on the faces of the crowd that the night was all about sharing a good time with your friends with the music you love, rather than attempting to collect bruises.
Opening the night with popular track, For The Record garnered cheers from a dedicated Thursday night crowd.
The set featured tracks from both their 2017 album Sponge Cake, and most recent 2019 album Apple Crumble such as Smile and Ali D. It was a foot-tapping good time, made up of keyboard, trombone solos and contagious dancing from lead singer Winston.
The set also featured a shout to fellow Aussie act Cosmo’s Midnight, with Winston Surfshirt performing their collaborative track Get To Know, and the show did not end without the feature of their biggest track, Be About You.
It is no wonder even Sir Elton John is counted amongst their fans. Winston Surfshirt bring the best of both worlds, blending hip hop and soul to perfection.
