Dark-grunge and distorted rock are entwined in The Effens’ latest track, Step Dog.

Austin Nops, Paul Theo, Hannah Weber, and Fabian Oblivion are the decisive lineup of The Effens, whose name encourages people to utter the word ‘fuck’ without actually swearing – this tells you all you need to know about who they are and their principles. The band debuted in 2018 and in those three years, has seen a number of changes in both their members and their style. Eventually is their third EP, and from it emerges the dark, distorted, grunge style they want to show off.

Focus track, and final track on the EP, Step Dog, is laden with dirty guitars and grungy, Cobain-esque vocals. Inspired by “overcoming the difficulties of life and coming out the other side intact,” the track is loud and energetic, providing a little bit of light and optimism behind its dark aura. Raucous from start to finish, Step Dog is a perfect end to this already wonderful EP.
