STRAY FOSSA Share Hazy Single ‘Transpiring’

With lyrical themes of time and separation, this single is a serene listening experience, especially for fans of Tame Impala’s production style and Cigarettes After Sex’s vocalisms.

Formed in early 2018 in Charlottesville, Virginia, Stray Fossa are an indie trio consisting of Zach Blount and brothers Nick and Will Evans. At the start of 2020, whilst they were quarantining together during the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, the three-piece wrote and recorded their debut album With You For Ever. Though it was a time of collective anxiety and isolation, their first self-produced album was released independently, and the record’s first single How Come? has amassed over 250,000 streams on Spotify alone.

For the members of Stray Fossa, who had been used to three years of living and working together, 2021 saw them split across continents which, consequently, inspired the themes of mental and physical distance in their upcoming second album. Instead of sharing a house, the trio were living and working on the album from their respective homes in Hamburg, Munich and Salem, Massachusetts. Although some recording was completed in their place of formation, Charlottesville, Virginia, the album, track by track, has predominantly been pieced together in the band’s makeshift bedroom studios and living rooms. Virtually recreating their former attic studio, Nick, Will and Zach wrote songs collaboratively via sporadic iPhone notes and shared project folders.

Kicking off 2022 for them musically and heightening anticipation for their next album, Stray Fossa have released Transpiring, their third single from the record. Following the release of their single For What Was back in November 2021, Transpiring is a vocally subdued yet sonically groovy lo-fi track.

Band member Will Evans, who produces all of Stray Fossa’s music, speaks on their second album:

We made a conscious effort to let the initial emotion become the final product. This often meant mixing in audio from the original demos, instead of re-recording anything.

Epitomising the band’s daring evolution, both audibly and thematically, Stray Fossa’s forthcoming thirteen-track album is the extroverted, good-spirited sibling of their debut record. Shifting from the themes of seclusion and unease to issues of space and distance, the indie triad are undoubtedly soundtracking the pandemic, with their own unique, introspective twist. Due for release on 3rd June, via Born Losers Records, Closer Than We’ll Ever Know is available for pre-order now, in both vinyl and merch bundle forms!
