Grimes and Janelle Monáe Invite You to Surreal World of ‘Venus Fly’
Artists unveil stunningly surreal video for Venus Fly.

A week ago Grimes and Janelle Monáe released the video for their absolute killer power tune, Venus Fly, through Tidal. Today it is finally available for us all!
Following the conceptual art trail of Grimes’ latest album, Art Angels, the video creates a narrative through strong characters and stunning cinematography. Lacing in fairytale-like settings with a distinct surrealism and astonishingly imaginative characters, Grimes and Monáe invite us into their own antagonist reality.
Playing with variations of clips and shapes, the video also includes something close to a ‘live’ set up, which is something we rarely see from Grimes. The concept of time is also artistically distorted; however, this aligns enigmatically with the non-linear, borderline bizarre structure of the tune. Venus Fly is an intricate, yet powerful tune and this transcends through to the visual aspect of it.
Like the Venus Fly flowers, the video also centre on aesthetic perception, luring the viewer into the false sense of safety that comes with misconception.
As with all aspects of Grimes, Claire Boucher (aka Grimes herself) is heavily involved in the process, here both as director, editor and as creative director of this futuristic piece of video art.
The artist-producer stated her excitement about the video in an honest Instagram post:
Sometimes it feels futile to be making art in this cruel and extreme political climate, but some of the brightest moments of the last few months for me and for a lot of you, I suspect, have come from seeing @janellemonae ‘s amazing and positive vision of the future, especially when we are being introduced to so many possible dystopian futures. Thanks to for giving so much time, energy and creativity to this project ??? as a director editor, creative director I also feel like is my strongest work, and I can’t wait to share w y’all. thanks @tidal for being amazing patrons of the arts. and @route_eleven !??my amazing team! (i know i used amazing twice but i just woke up and my mind is devoid of adjectives rn).
Venus Fly is taken from Grimes‘ latest album, Art Angels, available now on 4AD.
The video is produced by Route Eleven and presented by Tidal, and you really want to watch it.
