Artist Of The Week // MAXIMILLIAN
Our past decisions shape the person we are today, and there’s no one more familiar with that lesson than our artist of the week Maximillian.
Turning inwards and confronting the consequences of his past and his own shortcomings, Denmark’s Maximillian sets an honest tone with his first single of the year, Beautiful Scars. Bringing in a maturity beyond his age, there’s a vulnerability within his lyricism that allows listeners a glimpse into his innermost thoughts.
Subtle electronic beats mellifluously wash into emotionally charged vocals to deliver a raw performance, and there is some power to be found within this rawness despite the lightness of the sonics. Not one to shy away from his character, Maximillian declares “I’m not gonna fight back what I’ve become” and there’s an admirable confidence to be found within the velvety voice that tells the story.
Speaking of the track, Maximillian explains:
I made a lot of bad decisions, hung out with the wrong people and did a lot of things I regret. I literally lived a life on the edge at the age of 13 and “Beautiful Scars” is me facing my life growing up. It’s about how I used to behave and treat people around me. How we all have inner demons that sometimes burst out in the world with no warning. I believe it’s important to embrace your demons. No one’s perfect – so embrace that – and live your life as good as you possibly can!
With the release of this single, we asked Maximillian some questions about his childhood, his role models, and the music scene in Denmark.
You mentioned Beautiful Scars is (partially) in regards to your life at 13. What would you say is the biggest lesson you’ve learnt from the decisions you made?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned has to be that you reap what you sow. I made a lot of stupid decisions as a child, but it’s those decisions that have formed the man I am today.
Moving to a more positive note, what is your fondest memory of being 13?
I remember playing a lot of video games and hanging out with my friends, but to be honest my memories of being 13 ain’t that nice.
Do you have any physical scars?
Not on the outside, but a hell of a lot on the inside!
If you could set your music to a movie, what movie would it be the soundtrack of? Why?
Great question, haven’t really given that much thought. But if I could choose any movie I wanted, it’ll probably be a Marvel film haha – I love science fiction.
If your sound was a colour, what colour would it be?
All of them, I think one specific colour would remove the beauty of my music.
How did you first get into music? What made you want to be a musician?
I’ve always been singing, but I started taking it seriously when I started on my boarding school – from there on I just practised and practised.
Do you have any role models in music?
Michael Jackson is my hero.
What would you say is the best part of the Danish music scene at the moment?
There’s so many new great artists with unique sounds, I love discovering music on all of the music scenes in the world!
