Live music has come to a standstill this year due to the ongoing pandemic, meaning that the usual queues filled with adrenaline fueled fans waiting to get into venues and £6 pints are nowhere to be seen, however singer-songwriter and pop music royalty James Bay was on hand to create an hour long magical live stream experience that can be enjoyed from sofas around the world.

With the phrase ‘Turn it up and listen loud’ in bold capitals written across the screen, the camera pans out over London to find James upstairs in the iconic venue opening the show with an intimate and cozy performance of Scars taken from his first album Chaos And The Calm. We then follow him down to the grand main hall where his band reside ready to play a stripped back version of Peer Pressure that was filled with vulnerability as all guards come down and the audience are truly invited into this special performance.

Chew On My Heart came next with yet again a more stripped back song that adds to the intimacy of the evening as a whole and as James addresses fans hoping they’re “Cozy at home” in front of the television, the band proceed to play Us, a slow and emotional ballad.

After a guitar change (in classic James Bay style) the sound of fan favourite Let It Go fills the auditorium as the camera pans around the stage in a circular motion sliding into If You Ever Want To Be In Love. As the track comes to an end, James walks off the stage with the sound of the band playing in the background and sits at a keyboard isolated in a room within the venue and treats fans to a close and heartfelt version of Break My Heart Right

James then performed a very special cover on the piano of David Bowie’s Life On Mars?, then returning back to the main stage to perform Pink Lemonade and Craving, creating a moment of real unity and togetherness with the band and fans at home. He then proceeded to play Wild Love and Best Fake Smile that were moments of real energy and excitement.

Ending on arguably his biggest single, Hold Back The River closed the show. The night provided a moment of comfort and unity throughout these tough times and seeing the joy and constant smile on James’ face whilst hearing the tracks played in such a beautiful venue made for a night that will never be forgotten.
