In The Spotlight // EYELAR

Following the release of our ‘Ones To Watch’ list for 2021, ‘In The Spotlight’ offers the chance to get to know our picks more intimately and find out why we fell in love with them.

Eyelar

You’ve heard about the artists that we’re most excited for this year. Now, get ready to hear from the artists themselves as we shine a spotlight on their personality, the year just past, and their most anticipated musical artists. This week, we catch up with Eyelar, the refreshingly genuine voice in the pop world who has been carving out her own sound fearlessly.

Originating from The Netherlands, now based in London, Eyelar has already established her name and position in the music world. In the last couple of years she has continued to expand her stellar songwriting catalogue, having worked with Charli XCX, Bastille, and Demi Lovato amongst many other pop and alternative artists. Honing her craft, Eyelar had mastered the more mainstream side to pop music with the release of her summer banger Say It With Your Eyes, before stripping back for the emotionally vulnerable and intimate pop stunner, Doin’ It Again. With elegance and radiance to her sound, 2020 was the year Eyelar embraced her inner pop star, emerging as an artist in her own right. With the possibility of new music on the horizon, now’s the perfect time to hear about what she’s been up to, and what the future may hold.

What’s integral to the work of an artist?

I think it’s important to try and build an honest world, at least for me that is. I would love to build a world where people who like my music can come in and be a part of it.

Are there any behind-the-scenes stories of recording your latest singles (Doin’ It Again, Say It With Your Eyes) that you can share with us?

I’ll have to check the archives lol.

How would you describe the project to someone at a dinner party that’s never heard of you?

Honest lyrics and (what I strive to be) beautiful melodies.

What advice would you give to your pre-lockdown self?

You’re gonna be okay. In fact, I’m giving myself that advice to post lockdown me as well.

How would you sum up your 2020 in one sentence?

Fucked and beautiful. I’ve connected with myself and with people in ways I’ve never connected before.

Name one thing you can’t imagine your life without.

My mum.

What is the most useless talent you have?

I’m weirdly good at ping pong and for someone who doesn’t drink a lot I have a high tolerance for alcohol. I really don’t know why, but I do.

What are your hopes and dreams for 2021?

To FINALLY perform on a stage with people and dance together!!! I’m dying to go out and dance with my friends again.

And also release more music and write the best songs I’ve ever written. I also hope I can keep my room more tidy.

Which artists excite you the most this year?

I’m sorry to say it’s myself.

And finally, what does your music say about you?

It says that I am emotional, expressive and a little bit crazy.
