Artist Of The Week // ROBERT GRACE

Exploring the all-too-common feeling of reconnecting with your ex after a few too many drinks, Break The Silence is the relatable new single from Robert Grace.

Robert Grace 2021

We’ve all either been there ourselves, or heard tales about it; two people break up over a toxic relationship, and one calls the other in a moment of loneliness or drunken susceptibility, only to open themselves up to hurt again. It’s almost an age-old tale, but it receives a refreshed spin in Break The Silence, the new single from Robert Grace.

The Irish singer-songwriter continues to build his brand of honest songwriting, characterised by unflinching lyrics and the occasional tongue in cheek jousting, and Break The Silence follows this as it openly admits, ‘I don’t want to talk to you, you don’t want to talk to me, but when I get a little fucked up I might break the silence.’ It explores the complex feelings and internal conflict of wanting to distance yourself from someone who you know will hurt you, but you’ve been attached to in the past and the vulnerabilities that you can expose yourself to. Complete with a gripping pop beat and a grounding bass line, the staccato rhythms create a sharpness that you can’t help but get gripped into.

The track was the product of a virtual collaboration where Robert recorded his vocals in his home studio, before sending them over for some finishing touches to his songwriting and production team. It’s not the first time that Robert has worked with others though, as he has also written together with artists like gnash, KIDDO, and KIN amongst others.

Feeling captivated by the track, we speak with Robert more about writing virtually and his inspirations as a songwriter.

What’s a motto you live by?

Stop trying to please everyone!! I think a lot of people struggle with this but when you’re the artist YOU should choose what you’re most comfortable doing and what feels right.

If your sound had a colour, what colour would it be?

I feel like blue or purple would be a good representation of my sound. I have LEDs set up in my studio and I usually make music with those colours on in the background.

If you could set Break The Silence to a TV Show or movie, what would it be the soundtrack for?

Maybe ‘Sex Education’. I think it could work well as part of their soundtrack!

Did recording the track virtually differ from your expectations?

To be honest it was actually easier for me because I usually record my own vocals. So I could record each piece quite quick as we were writing.

I note that you’ve also done some collaborations and writings with other artists – how does that feel different to writing your own music?

For me anyway it doesn’t feel that different. I’m used to writing in lots of styles so I just treat every writing session the same. I just try to get the best song possible.

Where do you get the most inspiration for writing?

Personal experience mostly but I also get inspiration from stuff my friends/family go through as well as movies/TV shows!

And finally, slightly cliché, but what does music mean to you?

It means everything. I’ve never done anything else. It’s all I know, the only thing I’m good at & one of the few things in life that brings me a lot of happiness!!
