Get behind the scenes with Communions this week.

Celebrating the release of their second album Pure Fabrication, we caught up with Denmark’s Communions to chat about the stories that sparked the inspiration for their new record and their hopes and dreams for the next 12 months.

What’s a motto you live by?

Learn or create something new every day.

Did you come across any surprises, whether pleasant or unpleasant, while working on your new album Pure Fabrication?

Between recording and mixing the album, both our drummer and guitarist left the band. After finishing the album, we began playing with three new guys, who are great people and really talented.

Were there any particular events/stories that sparked the inspiration for the album?

The album is inspired by personal experiences, related to our upbringing in the US, and our move to Denmark during our teenage years.

What advice would you give to your pre-lockdown self?

Suddenly not being able to see a lot of people really made me think about the important friendships in my life. So I guess my advice would be to make sure to value them.

How, if at all, did lockdown impact your music making and producing process?

Lockdown came as we had finished recording and mixing our new album. At that time, we were looking for a record label to release it, as well as looking for new musicians to play with live, so there wasn’t much time for writing new music anyways. That being said, I think that when we start writing new music again, we will be much more open to the “work at home” approach, recording ideas at home, and presenting them to each other when we rehearse, instead of writing everything while being physically together.

How would you sum up your 2020 in one sentence? 

My 2020 was monotonous, but I was also more constructive in a personal sense.

Name 5 things that got you through lockdown?

Writing music, exercise, reading, family, and friends.

What’s the most interesting thing you discovered over lockdown (could be a revelation about yourself, a new TV show, a new hobby)?

I started running, which I never liked before. Now I’m addicted.

What are your hopes and dreams for the next 12 months? 

We hope to write and record a new album, and play a ton of more shows!

And finally, slightly cliché but what does music mean to you?

Music seems to be one of the most efficient and effective ways of regulating or enhancing your emotional state. To me, music has always had (among other things) a therapeutic function.
