In The Spotlight // SOMEBODY’S CHILD
Following the release of our ‘Ones To Watch’ list for 2021, ‘In The Spotlight’ offers the chance to get to know our picks more intimately and find out why we fell in love with them.
You’ve heard about the artists that we’re most excited for this year. Now, get ready to hear from the artists themselves as we shine a spotlight on their personality, the year just past, and their most anticipated musical artists. This week, we catch up with Somebody’s Child, the Irish quintet who gave us a raw, pounding run of indie (mixed with a dash of rock) melodies with their debut EP 20-Something. Sharing a sound and a narrative that makes you feel you’re right at home with the ones who understand you, there’s a lot of understandable excitement around the group. It’s only set to build as they gear up for their next release, Hope, Amongst Other Things which will arrive later this year, and so what better time than now to catch up with them? Having just released their brand new single, The Lover, we chatted with lead singer Cian Godfrey about their forthcoming EP and their hopes and dreams for 2021.
What’s integral to the work of an artist?
A strong desire to love what you do, and to do it only because you love it.
Are there any behind-the-scenes stories of recording your forthcoming EP, Hope, Amongst Other Things, that you can share with us?
There are some rather disturbing and/or questionable moments by one of the band members during the process of recording, but that will have to remain unsaid for now! What I can say is that we did a Ouija Board in a small house in the very west of Ireland which was freaky…
How would you describe the project to someone at a dinner party that’s never heard of you?
I really hate categorising, but if I had a gun to my head I would say ever-changing Indie-Rock/Alt-Pop.
What advice would you give to your pre-lockdown self?
Invest in Zoom.
How would you sum up your 2020 in one sentence?
An unprecedented basketcase.
Name one thing you can’t imagine your life without.
Music.
What is the most useless talent you have?
I can hold my breath for quite a while, and roll cigarettes very fast. I’m yet to be bested at these two things.
What are your hopes and dreams for 2021?
Lots of gigs mainly, to release a lot of music, to grow our fanbase and to write our first album!
Which artists excite you the most this year?
Recently I’ve been listening to Biig Piig who’s amazing, Pillow Queens’ debut album was unreal as well.
And finally, what does your music say about you?
It says I am who I am and that’s not going to change for anyone.
