It’s easy to stick with our same outlook on life when nothing drastic changes, as we get by the day-to-day with established routines and formed habits, but this all shifted for Pixey when she overcame a life-threatening illness in 2016. Seeing what we had taken for granted dangling on a precarious edge, it’s brought a renewed fervour to making the most of life, and she shares her refreshed perspective with the rest of us through vivacious melodies and gleeful lyricism.

In her latest single Sunshine State, she churns out a brightly-coloured and animated world, piecing together small excitements from the environment around us that we often overlook. Woven from a web of zingy guitars and sharp rhythms, it’s pure elation in musical form and will draw you into its irresistible enthusiasm to ‘give it up to the beat and the drum and the tune’. Encouraging you to lose yourself in the joys of music, Pixey has made the job effortless by crafting the perfect summery melody and complementing the euphoric mood of the track with her youthful vocals. It will be near-impossible to stop a grin from spreading across your face and stomping your feet along, especially in the face of Pixey’s playful urging.

Charmed by her approach and sound, we spoke more with Pixey about her own Sunshine State and what she enjoys most about being a musician.

What’s a motto you live by?

Not that I always stick to it and it’s very cliché but probably just to go with the flow. I’m always overthinking things so it’s always good to take a step back sometimes and just enjoy what’s happening around me even if it’s out of my control.

If your sound had a colour, what colour would it be?

It would definitely be yellow. I’m obsessed with writing around the weather, usually the sunshine, so yellow would definitely make sense.

If you could set Sunshine State to any TV show or movie, what would it be the soundtrack for?

Absolutely any Tarantino film.

What’s been the most defining moment of your musical life?

So far my most defining moment was when my EP reached 1 million plays. That absolutely blows my mind. It was a milestone I always wanted to reach so that felt unbelievable.

Given how involved you are with the whole writing and producing process, what’s your favourite part of music-making?

My favourite part is nailing the production. I love experimenting with different techniques and plugins, it can completely transform a tune and it’s so satisfying when you get it right.

What’s a song that gets you into the Sunshine State mood?

Definitely Description of a Fool by A Tribe Called Quest.

How do you want Sunshine State to impact listeners?

I would just love for people to vibe to it while walking down the street in the summer sunshine. The message of the song is unity, but more than anything I just love it when people just want to enjoy the mood of the beat.

And finally, slightly cliché, but what does music mean to you?

Everything – without it I wouldn’t feel like 100% of myself. It’s the only way I can really express my emotions and channel my thoughts. I love that I can make sense of my feelings through creating sound.
