Artist Of The Week // ALT BLOOM
Infused with a laid-back vibe, Alt Bloom provides the answer to all of your summer musical needs with text talk touch.
Alt Bloom is the creative output for Ethan Thompson’s journey of exploration and soul-searching, fusing together his musical upbringing and his changing influences to create a charming and luminous sound that you will not be able to resist. His latest single text talk touch feels all too relevant in the current day and age; we’re all guilty of spending too much time pining after a potential romance on our screens, before tentatively taking the steps to establish it into a more certain relationship. From swiping on dating apps to finally meeting in person, there’s an exhilaration to this whole process that Ethan masterfully captures in the light melodies in text talk touch.
Speaking more about the track, Ethan explains:
‘text talk touch’ are the steps of a relationship, moving from texting, to talking, to finally meeting in person. My co-writer Sebastian Kole and I had just come off a songwriting retreat in Romania, but we hadn’t hit a song together yet. When we landed in LA, we booked a writing session together with The Orphanage. This song, ‘text talk touch’ was written from top to bottom in about 10 minutes. It was a blast of a session, switching off writing sections of the song and then blasting it the rest of the night. Collaborating with Sebastian, The Orphanage and having gnash jump on the track was effortless and I can’t wait for everyone to hear.
Unable to step away from his allure, we chatted with Ethan about his songwriting retreat, the things that drive him, and mistaken text stories.
What’s a motto you live by?
Simple is a word I have tattooed on my arm. It’s really that most of the good things in life are simple, it doesn’t mean they are easy but they are simple. If you want something, do it.
If you could set text talk touch to a movie or TV series, what would it be the soundtrack for?
Elizabethtown (admittedly the only chick flick I like). For two reasons. First; they start falling for each other on the phone secondly I LOVE the soundtrack of that film. Many favourites off there.
If your sound had a colour, what colour would it be?
Green. It’s the colour of growth and being alive. Any place covered in a rich dark green is usually full of life.
What inspired you to take the songwriting retreat in Romania?
I mean, what’s not to like about that sentence: songwriting trip in Romania. It was an amazing experience because luckily the whole trip was with people who were from there. They showed us beautiful places and taught us a lot about the culture there.
What was the most memorable part of that experience?
I’d say outside of all the writing and meals, the people I met there. So many wonderful souls collected to do one thing they are all equally passionate about: writing music. The conversations with wine that went late into the morning hours were always thought provoking, educational and full of love.
How did the collaboration with gnash come about?
My manager reached out to his camp with text talk touch with an empty second verse. Gnash and his team liked it immediately and pretty quickly sent back a V2. I thought the lyrics Gnash did fit the vibe perfectly. Even though we thought a female would be the best fit, I loved the idea of having the song being about the person on the other end meeting someone new in the first verse and second verse being an older relationship. Felt like a fresh spin on a love song.
Have you ever received or sent any mistaken texts? What’s the most hilarious one you’ve gotten or sent?
Too many to even count. Recently my phone combined a number of someone new I was talking to with a fling from about 4 years ago. Literally the same name. I still don’t know why it did it but it made for a couple awkward Facetime pick ups where I was like who tf?? Oh what’s up !! Haha.
I noticed that you share a lot of quotes on your Twitter; where do you get these from?
I like to share good positive juice to water everyone’s inner soul seeds. I get them mostly from reading, other people, and life. If it feeds mine I pass it on.
If you could leave listeners with only one quote, what would you say?
If death is forever then take the years you have to truly live.
And finally, what does music mean to you?
Music is my being. It’s what I hear when my mind is quieted from it’s never ending narration and interpretation of the world around me. When I zone into great records from other artists I always feel lifted away from my thoughts. It’s an amazing escape from the confines of our reality almost like a prayer or meditation. It really means the world to me and I hope to share that feeling of freeness in my music.
